PC Kareem, Big Brother Nigeria misconduct hearing concludes

4 May 2022

Anne Studd QC represented the Appropriate Authority in this misconduct hearing where the officer breached a lawful order and appeared on Big Brother Nigeria.  The issue was whether Regulation 6 Police Regulations 2003 provided a power for a senior officer to prevent her from participating in a reality TV show, particularly one out of the jurisdiction.   Panel held that this was an application for special leave and therefore the restrictions on the private lives of officers under regulation 6 did not apply as the special leave had to be authorised and the objective agreed.  It was therefore open to a senior officer to grant special leave but refuse permission to participate on the show.  The order was therefore lawful and the officer breached it and brought discredit on the force.
