East London Inquests jury returns verdict

After more than eight weeks of evidence followed by a week of deliberation the jury in the East London Inquests has returned its conclusions. The jury found that fundamental failings by the Metropolitan police in the investigations into the deaths of Stephen Port’s first three victims “probably” contributed to the deaths of his subsequent victims. Port murdered Anthony Walgate, 23, a fashion student, Gabriel Kovari, 22, from Slovakia, Daniel Whitworth, 21, a chef, and Jack Taylor, 25, who worked in a bonded warehouse, between June 2014 and September 2015. He administered fatal doses of the “date rape” drug GHB and dumped their bodies near his flat in Barking. Assistant Commissioner Helen Ball described the jury’s findings as “devastating”.
