Coroner’s appeal in R(Hambleton) v The Coroner for the Birmingham Inquests being heard today at the Court of Appeal

The Coroner’s appeal in the case of R(Hambleton) v The Coroner for the Birmingham Inquests (1974) is being heard today at the Court of Appeal.

Sir Peter Thornton QC (the former Chief Coroner) is appealing against the decision of the Divisional Court quashing his ruling on the scope of the Birmingham Pub Bombings Inquest. He had ruled that the investigation into the identity of the suspected perpetrators (the so-called “perpetrator issue”) would not fall within the scope of the inquest.

Jeremy Johnson QC and Robert Cohen are appearing for the Chief Constable of West Midlands Police in front of the Lord Chief Justice, Lady Justice Hallett and Lord Justice McCombe.
