5 Essex Court currently has 43 members, including seven silks and is a specialist civil law chambers. It is ranked in Chambers UK and Legal 500 as a top tier set and members of chambers have appeared in the great majority of recent significant cases, inquests and public inquiries.

Examples of notable inquiries and inquests in which our barristers are currently instructed, or have been involved, include the Grenfell Fire Inquiry, the Undercover Policing Inquiry into Child Sex Abuse, the Leveson Inquiry, the Hutton Inquiry, the inquests into the deaths at London Bridge and Borough Market, the Tunisia shooting victims, Hillsborough disaster, Deepcut, Mark Duggan and the 7/7 bombing victims. Pupils are involved in these types of cases from the very beginning of their pupillages and often go on to be instructed as juniors when they are on their feet.

We offer a well-established pupillage programme which aims to develop the key skills required to succeed at the Bar. This commitment to our pupils is reflected both in the structure of pupillage and in the excellent retention rate of our pupils as tenants. Chambers also prides itself on providing pupils with a supportive, friendly and constructive environment in which to learn and begin their practices.  This is reflected in our in-house advocacy training and a unique talks programme designed to introduce pupils to our areas of work as well as life at the Bar.

5 Essex Court’s commitment to training was recognised in the Legal Cheek awards with Chambers winning the inaugural ‘Best Chambers for Training’ Award 2018. The award is the result of a survey carried out by Legal Cheek of more than 500 junior barristers, including pupils, at over 60 leading sets about their experience of training at the Bar. For more information see the Legal Cheek website.

Chambers looks to recruit up to two pupils each year of outstanding calibre.  Applicants should be able to demonstrate good intellectual ability as well as a commitment to our core practice areas. Our pupils receive a minimum of £55,000 during their pupillage year, comprising a £30,000 award and £25,000 guaranteed earnings.
