Mental Health and Detention: Managing the Complexities – June 2017 – Leeds, London & Birmingham

A practical seminar for the police and mental health practitioners – in association with Capsticks

5 Essex Court and Capsticks invite you to a jointly hosted half-day seminar focussed on the challenges facing the police and health service providers in working with those suffering with mental health issues and the legislative changes due to come into force. The seminar will be held in Leeds, London and Birmingham.

The session will be practical, based upon our experiences of advising clients – from both police forces and mental health bodies – in how to respond to members of the public with mental illnesses. We will draw upon “lessons learned” from dealing with problematic situations, as well as looking at recent legislative changes to anticipate future challenges.

The issues

The experience of those suffering from mental illness who come into contact with the criminal justice system has long been a cause for concern and a target for action. The issues become even more acute with increasing cuts in the provision of social care. The impact on the duties of the police, healthcare providers and Approved Mental Health Practitioners is significant. Effective communication and better joint working practices are key to improving outcomes for all involved.

New legislation – The Policing and Crime Act 2017 and mental health

The Policing and Crime Act is due to come into force in April/May 2017. Two key features of the Act are: firstly, the new duty upon the emergency services to collaborate; and secondly, the amendments to the provisions of sections 135 and 136 of the Mental Health Act 1983 which cover police powers and Places of Safety.

Our speakers will highlight the key implications of the changes, exploring how the new law will operate and offering suggestions on how best to prepare and make it work on the ground.

Anne Studd QC and Beatrice Collier will be joined by Capsticks and guest speakers.
